This is the "Next City", Cubic Transport System's concept of a smart city: an urban area that uses technology and data to improve efficiency and mobility.
Over the past decade, Cubic has taken the first step toward achieving its vision by securing contracts to develop a mobile toll collection system for eight of the 10 largest U.S. transportation networks. Day of the Day detailed signs and greeting cards; now, millions of bus and subway riders can pay their fares by showing their phone or credit card to a reader.
Transitional agencies have used payment technology to make it easier and faster, but privacy advocates are concerned that the new toll collection system creates greater scrutiny and security.
