LANDSTUHL, Germany - From snakebites to engaging targets and responding to threats, approximately 400 medical personnel from Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, the 30th Medical Brigade and the German Armed Forces (Bundeswehr) participated in Operation Courageous Defense, a joint training exercise designed to demonstrate . Integrated Medical Operations in the European Theater, March 3-6.
The exercise is aimed at training and certifying personnel in essential qualifications, which will include Warrior Tasks and Individual Critical Task Lists that test the Soldier's medical skills and abilities.

"We are soldiers first," said Command Sgt. Maj. Anthony Forker, Command Sergeant Major, Corps Command, LRMC. We need to ensure a ready medical force and through this exercise we will achieve that.
Under Section 702 of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2017, the drive for operational readiness and support of operational and combat missions takes precedence over the provision of clinical/healthcare services and the execution of business operations at an MTF. That is, Soldiers, Airmen, and Sailors must be able to perform their duties on and off the battlefield. It provides the Air Force and Navy to train personnel not only in the medical competency of a military treatment facility, but also in their ability to provide patient care in combat and operational environments.
For more than two years, LRMC has implemented training to train in a variety of medical care roles in combat environments, from immediate life-saving measures to evacuating patients to a higher level of care.
"OCD is an innovative, adaptive way to train our Soldiers within the MTF without interfering with patient care," said Lt. Col. Christina Buchner, commander, Corps Command, LRMC. "It shows that we can train like soldiers and make sure we're ready for any mission, be it global or local."

According to Buchner, the training also helps achieve the goal of synchronizing and providing support to combatant commanders and allies.
"(The training) ensures that we are aligned with the combatant commander's objectives to provide medical capabilities to maximize their performance on the battlefield."
"In a hospital we are comfortable and familiar with our jobs, and some of our other skills that we may have learned earlier in our careers could use more attention," said 1st Lt. Addison Montiel, a nurse in LRMC's Department of Medical Surgery. "Training like this allows us to keep those skills sharp when the time comes when we need to use them."
Because some medical roles are interchangeable between different levels of care, the exercise also gives Soldiers knowledge of medical roles outside of MTF settings.

For Soldiers with the 30th Medical Brigade, Operation Courageous Defense gives them the opportunity to ensure the unit is at the highest state of readiness to support DEFENDER-Europe 20, the largest deployment of U.S. Forces Europe in 25 years. The large-scale guided exercise aims to build military readiness and interoperability among allies and partners to enable the movement of a large force across theater.
In addition to proving combat and medical skills, Operation Courageous Defense empowers unit-level leaders to develop and execute their roles as NCOs and company-level officers.
"For a lot of these Soldiers, this is probably their first duty station, and it's different when you're in (combat weapons units) than an MTF," said Sgt. 1st Class April Luikart, NCO in charge, Medical Division, LRMC. "So (Operation Courageous Defense) not only sets them up for success going to their next duty station, but when they deploy or go to any different type of unit, that's their foundation, that's it that they should know."
"We put together an adaptive model for all military treatment facilities to demonstrate that they can implement this type of training at their facilities without disrupting patient care," Buchner said. "By doing this with other units, it makes us a more unified force of surgical partners within the medical field."
Military Benefits Every Service Member Should Use
As a Role 4 theater hospital, LRMC is responsible for the medical care of wounded, ill, or injured warfighters evacuated from the US. European Command, U.S. Africa Command and U.S. Central Command Areas of Operation Regional Health Command Europe provides high-quality health care to active duty service members and their families and ensures Soldiers are medically prepared to support their mission.
In addition, itary Treatment Centers in Europe offer care to retirees, family members enrolled in TRICARE Select, and non-TRICARE beneficiaries on a space-available basis. However, the availability of these appointments varies across the region based on clinical staffing and operational unit support.
Space-available care simply means that if an appointment is available and has not already been booked, then a pensioner or civilian can be seen at that appointment. If all appointments are booked or otherwise unavailable, then patients with available space should seek treatment at the host country facility.
